Lee: A Deserved Victory

Academy boss says scholars were clear and deserved winners against Reading on Wednesday evening

Under-18s head coach David Lee was extremely pleased with his battling youngsters following Tuesday night’s FA Youth Cup victory over Reading.

The goals on the night came from Tom Youngs and Chris Lester to set up another away tie with either West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur. 

After the game, Lee said: “The boys battled really hard throughout the game and finished it stronger than the opposition. We fought well against a big, strong physical team and matched them as well as trying to keep a well-disciplined shape.” 

“Their professionalism was excellent, combined with the desire and work ethic. Travelling on the day before the game allowed us to prepare mentally, physically and tactically for what was a big occasion for the boys. 

“We had a game-plan and our team structure worked for the boys. We forced them into errors and that’s when we started to get on top of the game.

“As for the goals, Tom’s run was brilliant before finding the net and I was really pleased with the good link-up play between Clough and Lester for the second.” 

The young Wanderers have another tough task on Saturday 19 when they visit Chelsea for an Elite Group league fixture.
