Manager's Sunderland Reaction

"We had a game-plan which we stuck to," says Freedman after the win at the Stadium of Light

Dougie Freedman was pleased with the manner of his side’s victory, as Wanderers turned in a finely-tuned performance to ease their way into the next round of the FA Cup defeating Premier League opponents Sunderland on their own patch.

Marvin Sordell netted a brace after the interval, one of which came from the penalty spot, to secure a 2-0 triumph and set up a fourth round tie against Everton at the Reebok.

Speaking in his post-match press conference Freedman said: “It was very pleasing, not only to win the match but to also keep a clean sheet.

“I’m delighted because we thoroughly deserved the win. We had a game-plan which we stuck to.

“We slowly worked our way into the game. In the first half we were compact and solid at the back and deal with the threats that Sunderland posed.

“We also passed and moved the ball very well and by the end of the 90 minutes the team that won the game deserved it.

“We had to come here and defend properly, stay in the right zone and the right areas and quieten the crowd. Credit to the players, that was exactly what they did.

“We are trying to pass our way through and that’s the way I want us to play going forward. Certainly in the last 20 minutes we were well on top with our passes and created a number of opportunities.

“You have to base this on a good defence and a solid work ethic and as a team we did exactly that.

“We have been playing some very good football of late, but sometimes without the results. The key for us is to keep on going and carry on doing what we believe in and supporting each other.

“Thanks to the travelling fans. Their backing was great. They were loud and stuck with us for the full game. It’s a long way to come for a midweek game and we really appreciate it. Hopefully they’ll enjoy their trip home.”
