Under-14s impress in London

Paul Wroe's youngsters finish third in Premier League Elite Tournament

Bolton Wanderers’ under-14 side finished third in the recent Premier League Elite Tournament held at the David Beckham Academy in London.

Wanderers qualified for the highly-regarded competition after progressing through a north-west qualification group consisting of Liverpool, Manchester United, Everton and Wigan.

Paul Wroe’s youngsters then impressed in the ten-team final event that was held over two days in the capital against other category one academy sides, scoring impressive victories over Wolves (4-0) and Chelsea (1-0).

A draw against Southampton (0-0) and a defeat against eventual winners of the competition Manchester City (0-1) meant that Wanderers finished second in their five-team group, setting up a third-placed play-off against Manchester United.

Bolton ran out 1-0 winners, with Head of Youth Development Phase Nicky Spooner proud of the team’s effort.

He said: “Every one of the boys was a credit to the club. They competed at the highest level against other category one academy players.

“The lads can hold their heads high and the experience of playing tournament football will be a great benefit to them.”
