Manager on Rotherham workout

Dougie Freedman speaks after Wanderers' opening game of pre-season at Rotherham

After Wanderers’ opening game of pre-season manager Dougie Freedman declared himself ‘comfortable’ with the fitness levels his side are currently showing.

The Whites went down to a 2-1 defeat against Rotherham at the New York Stadium, with Marvin Sordell on target for the visitors.

Speaking in his post-match press, Freedman said: “These games are all about players getting minutes under their belts. It’s a fitness exercise, one in which I’m able to assess where players are at.

“I’m also able to look at other things, such as different shapes and styles of play.

“At this moment in time I’m very comfortable with our fitness levels.

“I thought in the game we could have done a little bit better performance-wise – that’s on both our defensive work and our attacking movement upfront. There’s certainly a lot there for us to get our teeth in to.

“I’m very comfortable with the way the lads have trained up until this point. We probably just need to get our heads in the right place and get in the zone a little more when these games continue to come around.

“Young Jan Gregus came in and played in a number of roles and we also had Tim Ream playing at left-back. It’s good to understand as coach exactly what you’ve got when games come around.”
