Chungy's World Cup mission

Korean international speaks ahead of a crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Qatar

Chung-Yong Lee says he and the rest of the Bolton squad must bounce back with victory at Charlton – though not until after what he describes as a ‘must win’ World Cup qualifier for South Korea against Qatar.

The international break sees a number of Wanderers’ players jet off around the world, though few have a more important game than Chung-Yong.

South Korea first face Syria in a behind-closed-doors friendly, before tackling Qatar in a crunch World Cup qualifier in Seoul. A win for Chung-Yong’s side would put South Korea in the driving seat for qualification to what would be their eight consecutive World Cup finals.

Speaking after the weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Ipswich, Chung-Yong said: “On Sunday I will fly to Korea. We have two games to play; both are in Korea.

“One friendly against Syria and then we play a very important World Cup qualifier against Qatar. I will make myself in good condition for the games when we train with the national side.

“The Syria game is with no fans – a practice game. Then the game against Qatar is a must win. We have four games left in qualifying and are second in the table. We recently lost in a friendly against Croatia and now it is important for everyone that we concentrate and do our best.

“It’s a busy time for me. As soon as I arrive in Korea I must go train with the national team. Maybe I will have some time to see my family and friends and maybe go for some food. I have to see what the plan is.

“I want to come back to Bolton feeling good. The game at Charlton is important.

“The pitch and wind made it very difficult to play properly against Ipswich. They had good positions and shape and made it hard for us.

“A draw would have been a fair result, but this game is now gone. After games like this we are always looking forward. We want to forget this game and now get ready for Charlton after the internationals.

“I feel we still have a chance of going to the play-offs, so we have to remain positive.”
