Academy pair deliver road safety message

Wanderers duo attend BSM event

Academy graduates Joe Riley and Josh Vela visited young season ticket holders taking part in a BSM road safety event at the Reebok Stadium last week.

The road safety initiative teaches driving techniques and important safety messages in a bid to make them safer drivers as well as giving the young adults the opportunity to get behind the wheel in a driving school car with a BSM instructor and take part in classroom sessions to increase awareness of the dangers of driving.

The sessions are modelled on a successful safer driving programme given to players by BSM driving instructors, funded by the PFA, over the last few years.

Speaking after their visit to the session, Joe said, "Initiatives like this are a really good idea as they educate our young fans about the importance of road safety as well as giving them the opportunity to get behind the wheel themselves.

"Josh and I took part in this BSM programme ourselves when we were in the Academy and it was really beneficial as it taught us both a lot about driving techniques and driving safer."

Head of BSM, Mark Peacock said: "Young drivers are disproportionately represented in accident statistics so it’s great that Bolton Wanderers, which has so many young fans, is taking a leading role in promoting road safety.

"All drivers, however experienced, can benefit from some tips to improve their driving so I hope that everyone has gained something from the sessions."
