Club statement: Brian Smith

Bolton Wanderers are saddened to hear of the death of former player Brian Smith.

After a short illness Brian passed away last week, aged 57.

Bolton-born Smith was part of the successful squad of the late 1970s, after making his senior debut for the club in 1974. He initially provided reliable cover to John Byrom, though injury limited his appearances in the promotion-winning season of 1977/78.

The following campaign he established himself as a key member of the squad in the first division, making a total of 21 appearances.

He featured in a famous 2-1 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in April of 1979, before leaving for Blackpool later that year.

In total Smith made 57 appearances in all competitions for the club, netting four goals.

Bolton Wanderers’ thoughts and well wishes are with Brian’s family and friends at this difficult time.
