Freedman praises resolve

Manager offers his thoughts following Wanderers' victory over the Terriers

Dougie Freedman hailed his side’s determined attitude in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Despite the hosts enjoying a number of opportunities to take the lead including an effort off the crossbar from former Wanderers’ striker Danny Ward, Joe Mason came off the bench to snatch an injury time winner for the Whites.

A dramatic ending to a fiery contest, the manager paid tribute to the resolute mentality shown by his team, believing that the victory is testament to the hard work put in during the course of the season.

“The result illustrates how far we’ve come over the past four months,” he said following the final whistle. “Today’s committed and spirited performance, plus our great skill and defending, means that we deserved that result.

“We can pass a bit better and it wasn’t until the 75th minute that we managed to get our passing game together, but once we did it was fantastic.

“Four months ago, that is a game we would have lost and it shows how much we have developed.

“I felt today that Huddersfield were fantastic and they performed very well - it was something that we were doing at the beginning of the season when we had the performances but the wins just weren’t coming.”

He continued: “I’ve been involved in the Championship long enough as a player and a manager to know that you’re not always going to perform at your highest level, but we did enough to warrant the three points.

“Within the group of players we have at this football club, there’s been an injection of spirit and togetherness.

“I wanted people to come to this football club that want to play for the jersey and that’s why we’ve been performing and picking up the results that we have done over the last three or four months.

“We know we can perform better, but it’s a good feeling knowing that we can go anywhere in this league and I can pick any team who I know are capable of winning games of football.”
