David Wheater on the importance of a positive start

Defender eager for Wanderers to start as they mean to go on ahead of the upcoming campaign

David Wheater has called for he and his Bolton team-mates to start the new 2014/15 season as they ended the last.

Wanderers finished the recent campaign in impressive form, losing just two in their last 17 outings.

And the Redcar-born defender believes the additions that have already been made to the squad will prove pivotal in helping the side fly out of the traps come the season’s opener at Watford on August 9.

With the first team squad due to return to Euxton for pre-season training early next week, the defender also admitted that he is already ready and raring to go.

“I’m definitely excited to get going again,” said the centre-half. “The players that came in on loan last season had such a big impact and we’ve been able to sign a number of them up.

“We have to aim to start the season as we finished it, in that similar run of form.

“Watford on the opening day is a tough start, then we’ll be right back up at it again for the cup game against Bury.”

The opening weeks of the season also see Wheater’s former employers Middlesbrough come to town with Aitor Karanka’s men due to visit BL6 on Tuesday 19 August.

“When the fixtures come out I always look for the games against Middlesbrough and the ones that are on my birthday,” he confessed.

“I’ve no doubt it’ll be a tough first few weeks, but I’m sure after pre-season we’ll be right into the swing of things from the off. We’ll want the games thick and fast.”
