Iain Brunskill proud of Bolton's Senior Cup Final victory

Development coach shares delight with bwfc.co.uk following Wanderers' cup win

Iain Brunskill was very proud of his side’s display after they beat Manchester City to lift the Manchester FA Senior Cup on Sunday.

Quade Taylor scored the only goal early in the first half as the Whites put in a strong defensive performance, limiting Patrick Vieira’s side to very few opportunities.

Speaking to bwfc.co.uk after the match, Brunskill praised the whole squad’s performance.

“I think, particularly in the first half, the boys played really well,” said the Whites Development Coach. “The biggest compliment that we had was that Man City had to change their formation because obviously we were doing so well.

“We got a nice goal after five minutes. It was a good run from Quade. He’s managed to get across the defender and get the goal.

“It was also a great delivery from Tom Walker. We thought it was important for him to get a game he’s not had a lot of game time recently, and he looked particularly dangerous in the first half.

“I thought there was other opportunities in the first half as well where a little bit more composure around the goal we could have added to it.

“After that, the second half was a bit different we defended really well. They had a lot of the ball but I thought we defended really well as a team and limited them to hardly anything in front of goal.

“I thought the two lads in midfield, Rob Holding and Hayden White, considering it’s not a natural position for them, both were excellent throughout the game and did a fantastic job, as did the rest of the back three and the goalkeeper.

“Filip Twardzik also did well in defence. I asked him specifically where he liked playing a few weeks ago and he said centre back.

“It suits him there as a three. When we play three at the back, we have a lot more of the ball and he’s really comfortable with that left foot and plays some excellent passes.

Brunskill continued: “Speaking to Patrick Vieira before the game, their lads are a little bit younger than us but there’s a bit more financial clout behind them.

“They’ve got a lot of quality and it’s credit to our lads that they got ahead and played really positively first half and then managed to defend really well together as a team second half.

“It’s good for the players to have got the win. It’s a wonderful pitch and environment for them to play in so it’s very pleasing, and it’s a nice little boost for them to win a trophy as well.”
