U18s: Bolton 2-2 Sunderland

Jamie Thomas scores brace in dramatic Black Cats stalemate

A stoppage-time equaliser saw Bolton Wanderers Under-18s came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland.

Jamie Thomas fired the Whites ahead inside the opening ten minutes with a low drive from inside the area, having already once been denied by the visitors’ keeper earlier in the game.

Sunderland fought back to equalise shortly after the break, and despite Bolton creating numerous opportunities, it appeared they would fall to defeat after the Black Cats went ahead late on courtesy of a 90th minute penalty.

However, the Trotters fought back to equalise moments later as Thomas converted a Christopher Cvetko cross to net his second of the game and earn his side a share of the spoils.

Speaking after the final whistle, Whites head coach David Lee said: “The lads showed great character to come back and score the equaliser after falling behind so late in the game.

“Overall it was a determined effort from them against a good team. We created a number of chances and there are a lot of positives to take out of the match.

“I also introduced a couple of players who have not had much game-time with a view to their future development, so it was good for them to be involved as well.”
