Neil Lennon - Our most complete performance so far

Manager believes his side's showing against Wigan is best during his tenure at the club so far

Neil Lennon believes his side’s attacking performance against Wigan in the FA Cup was the best of his tenure at the club so far.

The Trotters controlled the tie at Macron Stadium for large periods and eventually sealed progression to the fourth round courtesy of a debut goal from Zach Clough.

And after the game the manager reserved special praise for academy graduate Clough.

“It was a debut to dream of,” Lennon said. “He’s been progressing very well in training of late and we have a lot of confidence in him.

“We didn’t tell him he was playing until an hour before kick off because we didn’t want him thinking too much about the whole situation.

“I feel we could have been four or five up by half time. We created a hatful of chances and I don’t think anyone could begrudge us of victory today.

“Attacking-wise, I feel it is the best we’ve been since we’ve come through the door. I’m a very happy manager today.

“The football was excellent and when you’re creating chances like we were you’re always going to be happy. The only critical thing I could say about us today was that we didn’t put many of our chances away.

“We have two one on ones in the first half, Wheats has headed wide from a corner and in the second half Zach was unlucky with a deflected shot.

“I felt we looked dangerous going forward on every occasion. It worked for us today.

“I’d also like to give special praise to Liam Trotter, who I thought was outstanding today. He’s showing why the club strived to bring him here.

“We were looking for a reaction following the defeat last week and we got exactly that. That’s six wins and a draw in seven home games now.

“We’re also delighted for the fans. Our support has been outstanding in recent weeks and we were disappointed not to be able to send the fans home happy at Huddersfield.

“We had another really good crowd today and they are responding to what we’re trying to do. I can’t thank them enough right now.

“It’s an important win for us and we now have a fourth round draw to look forward to.”
