David Wheater nominated for April's Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award

Defender in the running to secure the division's monthly accolade for his efforts last month

David Wheater is in contention to win Sky Bet League One's Player of the Month accolade for April.

Having scored twice in the month as Wanderers earned automatic promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship, the defender is now in the running to scoop the award, with the winner being announced at 6am on Friday 5 May.

The complete list of nominees meanwhile is as follows:

Leon Clarke (Sheffield United) – striker
When he is on form and infused with belief, there are very few EFL strikers who can match the much-travelled frontman. Finally free of injuries, his six goals in six games came in all varieties – headers, volleys and sweeping finishes.

Ricky Holmes (Charlton Athletic) – winger
Embarked upon a personal goal of the month competition in April with a series of stunning solo efforts. Free-kicks as well as cutting in from the left and shooting into the far corner are the specialities of Charlton’s attacking driving force.

Mark Marshall (Bradford City) - winger
Rediscovered his early season zest with a series of sparkling displays as Bradford secured a play-off berth. Equally happy running outside defenders or cutting inside, his two assists and two goals included a lovely strike against Bury.

David Wheater (Bolton Wanderers) – central defender
Scored in each of his side’s final two games to make it nine for the season as promotion was clinched – a superb return for a defender who fulfilled his primary role manfully as part of a rearguard which conceded just two goals in seven games.
