Foot in Both Camps: Bristol City v Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon. With that in mind, bwfc.co.uk take a look at a selection of players who have turned out for both sides.

Tony Caldwell

Playing during the 1980s, the Salford born forward played four years for Wanderers, from 1983 to 1987.

He made 175 competitive appearances for the Whites, scoring 78 goals for the club and topped the club’s goal scoring charts whilst at Burnden Park.

Following on from his time in Greater Manchester, Caldwell moved to Bristol City, where he stayed for the 1987/88 season.

Neil Danns

The Guyanese box to box midfielder joined Bristol City on loan during his tenure at Leicester City in November 2012 until January on loan.

He played nine times for the club, scoring two goals for the Championship side.

Fast forward to September 2013 and Danns signed for the Whites on an initial three-month loan deal, joining up with former coach Dougie Freedman.

Danns remained with Wanderers until June 2016, making 116 appearances for the club during his stay in BL6.

Nicky Hunt

Coming through the youth academy at Bolton, Hunt made his first team debut in 2000/01 as a substitute for Colin Hendry against Sheffield United on the final day of the regular season.

With 143 starts for the club in his nine years at the University of Bolton Stadium, he enjoyed playing in the UEFA Cup for the Whites, in addition to starting in the League Cup Final against Middlesbrough in 2004.

Following on from his nine-year stint at Wanderers, the right-back joined Bristol City on a two-year deal.

He went on to make eight appearances for the Robins.

Trevor Morgan

The centre forward had two spells with Bristol City, once in 1984 and again in 1987.

Referring to his second move, Morgan joined City from arch rivals Bristol Rovers for a fee of £10,000.

Morgan joined Bolton in 1987 from Bristol City, coming off the back of aiding them to promotion from the Third Division.

The forward’s two season stay with the club was one capped off by winning the Associate Members Cup in 1988/89, where Morgan scored the third in a 4-1 victory over Torquay United.

Morgan currently manages the Bhutan national team, taking the role on in February 2018.

Bob Taylor

Taylor became a goal scoring menace for the Robins after signing in 1989, scoring eight goals in his first 12 games in his first season at the club.

His exploits in front of goal earned him the nickname of ‘God’ by a local fanzine, The Bountyhunter.

He helped City earn promotion to Division Two in his first full season there, with 27 goals in the league earning him the club’s Player of the Year for that campaign.

The forward left the club in 1992, to join West Bromwich Albion.

Following loan spells at the Whites in 1998, this move became permanent in July for a reported fee of £90,000.

A total of 27 goals in 96 games followed for Taylor whilst at the Whites, gaining cult hero status in his early days on loan scoring Wanderers goal in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Aaron Wilbraham

The target man joined Bristol City in July 2014 from Crystal Palace on an initial one-year contract.

He scored 21 goals in 44 competitive appearances in his first season at Ashton Gate, and played an extra two seasons for the Robins.

In August 2017, ‘Albie’ joined the Whites on a one-year contract. He scored just two goals for Bolton, but how vital they were.

His first goal came in the form of a last-minute equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday in March 2018.

His final bow came against Nottingham Forest on the final day of the 2017/18 season, where he started up top on his own.

With 86 minutes on the clock, Wanderers were set for the drop to Sky Bet League One, but David Wheater clawed an equaliser back leaving mere minutes left for the Whites to find a goal to retain Championship status for 2018/19.

Cue Aaron Wilbraham losing Tendayi Darikwa in the box and scoring a diving header to send the University of Bolton Stadium into rapturous applause.

Mark Little

Little joined the Robins from Peterborough United in June 2014, after turning down a new contract offer at Posh.

The right back was a part of the City squad that won both the Football League Trophy and Sky Bet League One in his first season at the club.

He was a regular fixture in the Bristol City starting line-ups during his time at Ashton Gate, before joining Bolton in June 2017.

Little played regularly during the 2017/18 season for the Whites, notably starting in the final game of the season against Nottingham Forest where fellow former Robin Aaron Wilbraham scored the winning goal to keep Wanderers in the Sky Bet Championship.
