Report: Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Bristol Rovers

28 January 2020

Daryl Murphy’s eighth goal of the season earned Bolton Wanderers a Sky Bet League One point after his second half strike cancelled out Jonson Clarke-Harris’ opener.

The big Irishman’s leveler came with seven minutes of the game remaining when he latched onto a corner taken by Brandon Fleming to head home.

But Wanderers suffered a major blow when substitute Will Buckley was carried off the field with a suspected fracture just four minutes after replacing Ronan Darcy.

Keith Hill made one change from Wanderers’ previous league game against Portsmouth with Daryl Murphy replacing Joe Dodoo who named among the substitutes.

Wanderers keeper Remi Matthews was pressed into action early on and made a fantastic save to keep out Ed Upson from close range after he latched on to a dangerous cross from the right-hand side.

The visitors were looking intent from the off and forward Jonson Clarke-Harries was lurking in the danger area after connecting with a Josh Ginnelly cross.

Matthews was involved again and had to be alert to turn away a Ginnelly effort after the frontman was afforded time to get shot on target.

At the other end, Dennis Politic connected with a loose ball and charged into the box, but his eventual shot was blocked before it could cause any danger.

A good chance fell the way of Daryl Murphy after a lovely one-two between Ronan Darcy and Josh Emmanuel culminated with the latter sending in a superb cross which found the head of the Irishman who was unable to power past Jamal Blackman in the Rovers goal.

Matthews made another tremendous save just before the half hour point when he kept out a bullet header from a corner. Toto Nsiala and Jason Lowe then combined well to block the ball on the goal line.

Moments later and Darcy cut in on his right foot before seeing a shot from outside the box get held by Blackman.

Manager Keith Hill made his first change ten minutes inside the second half when he brought on Joe Dodoo for Emmanuel.

Politic saw an effort go narrowly wide after running onto Darryl Murphy’s sublime flick.

But the visitors got their noses in front when Clarke-Harris poked home.

Buckley came on to replace Darcy with twenty minutes to go but only lasted four minutes on the pitch before being carried off after falling victim to a heavy challenge.

Wanderers were determined to find an equaliser and the lively Politic saw his deflected cross go for a corner.

From Ethan Hamilton’s resulting corner, Dodoo’s header went wide of target.

That goal game and Wanderers leading goalscorer Daryl Murphy was the man to salvage a point when his header from Fleming’s corner was emphatically powered home.
