He said: “When I first joined the club I was welcomed with open arms by the Bolton community. The town soon became my home and it quickly became apparent just how special this place is.
“I cannot thank them enough for the love and warmth they have shown me.”
Phil Mason, the club’s chaplain, said: “Everybody at Bolton Wanderers Football Club and Bolton Wanderers Community Trust were saddened to hear of Margaret’s passing.
“Tony is very popular with our supporters, colleagues and the wider community of Bolton, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family ahead of Margaret’s funeral next week.”
