Foot in Both Camps: Burton Albion

With this evening’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Burton Albion just hours away, we have profiled six players who have played for both Wanderers and tonight’s opponents, including three of the current Bolton squad.

Remi Matthews

First choice stopper with Wanderers, Matthews joined the club on a permanent basis from Norwich City, but during his time under contract at Carrow Road he spent time on loan at various other clubs to gain experience.

During the 2014/15 season and the 2015/16 season, Matthews had two loan spells at Burton Albion – his first time away from Norwich City, and he made six appearances. One of his appearances for the Brewers included a 1-0 League Cup victory against Wanderers in August 2015.

Lloyd Dyer

Well-travelled winger Lloyd Dyer spent last season with Wanderers under the management of Phil Parkinson, but made just seven appearances before his departure at the end of the campaign.

Dyer had spent time with Burton Albion before his move to the University of Bolton Stadium and made 84 appearances (15 goals) in the two campaigns at the Pirelli Stadium. His form for Nigel Clough’s side was impressive but after returning to the club he made just nine appearances before leaving at the end of a short-term contract.

Luke Murphy

Currently in his second season with Wanderers, Murphy has currently made 44 appearances (2 goals) for the club and prepares to face his former employers this Tuesday evening.

Signing from Leeds United in the summer of 2018, the central midfielder spent time at Burton Albion on loan from the West Yorkshire club during the second half of the 2016/17 season, and the entirety of the 2017/18 season – making a total of 61 appearances (2 goals) during the club’s two season stint in the Sky Bet Championship.

Marvin Sordell

Recently retired from the professional game, Sordell signed for Bolton from Watford in January 2012 for an initial £3 Million fee and went onto make 29 appearances (8 goals) for the club. After a loan stint with Charlton Athletic, the forward who represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympic games signed for Burnley on a permanent basis in July 2014.

In January 2017, after leaving Coventry City Sordell signed for Burton Albion and achieved relative success during his time with the Brewers. Spending two and-a-half years with the club, he made 84 appearances (9 goals) before retiring shortly after a spell with Northampton Town.

Chris O’Grady

Another current member of the Wanderers squad, O’Grady is an experienced and well-travelled striker the 34 year-old has made 23 appearances (4 goals) for Keith Hill’s side at the time of writing.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion frontman spent the 2016/17 season on loan at Burton Albion from the Seagulls and made 26 appearances (1 goal) for the club.

Stephen Warnock

Now doing work in the broadcasting field as a television pundit, Warnock spent three months on loan with Bolton Wanderers during the 2012/13 season having joined from Aston Villa. Making 15 appearances for the club, he had spells with Leeds United, Derby County and Wigan Athletic before a move to Burton Albion in June 2017.

During the 2017/18 campaign, the former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers full-back made 15 appearances (1 goal) for the club but spent the second half of the season on loan with Bradford City in Sky Bet League One before announcing his retirement at the end of the campaign.
