Kachunga Relishes League Opener

Elias Kachunga was delighted to register his first League goal in a Wanderers’ shirt to help secure a ‘massive’ win over Doncaster Rovers.

Kachunga crossed for the fit-again Eoin Doyle to put Wanderers ahead before he got himself on the scoresheet with a poacher’s finish to make it 2-0.

The summer signing remained a constant threat with Whites’ boss Ian Evatt hailing his best performance in a Wanderers’ shirt.

And Kachunga was pleased with his night’s work as he made it three goals in five games in all competitions as Evatt’s men ran out impressive 3-0 winners.

“I am pleased to get it off my chest and score my first goal in the league,” said Kachunga, who started in a central attacking role behind Doyle.

“I’m pleased to have got more minutes in my legs and I feel good.

“Hopefully I can still improve and help the team with my goals and assists and keep striving forward.

“I just have to build on this and we have to build on the performance and try and get the next three points on Saturday.”

Wanderers made it back-to-back home wins with Kachunga’s goal with the last kick of the first half virtually assuring all three points after struggling Rovers had seen defender Joe Olowu sent off for a foul on Dapo Afolayan.

The Whites - who moved up to 11th in the table - now entertain Cheltenham Town on Saturday with momentum restored after their FA Cup exit and a 1-0 league defeat at Wycombe.

And Kachunga is backing Evatt’s men to keep digging deep to defy an injury crisis exacerbated by a hamstring strain to Lloyd Isgrove and a one-match ban for Dapo Afolayan after a harsh-looking fifth booking of the season.

“I think it was a good performance from the team and we were delighted to get the three points, especially here at home,” Kachunga added.

“It was a massive win. We bounced back and showed a real togetherness and it was a really important three points for us.

“We had a few problems at the start but then we came better and better and after the first goal and the red card we dominated the game.

“When you have injuries everyone has to come together and play their part in the team. When you come in you have to perform and we did that.

“Unfortunately we had another injury and Dapo is suspended but the next one will come in and do his job and we will stick together.”
