Butler arrived at Macron Stadium in June 2016 alongside manager Phil Parkinson having held the position of first team goalkeeping coach at Valley Parade since 2013.
An experienced shot-stopper during his playing days, the now 50-year-old started his professional career with Lincoln City, impressing to earn a move to Aston Villa in the late 1980s.
Although limited in his opportunities with the Villans, Butler’s most fruitful spell was to come in the form of a five-year stint at Oakwell with Barnsley where he made over a century of appearances for the Tykes between 1991 and 1996.
After leaving the Yorkshire outfit, Sheffield-born Butler plied his trade for the likes of Wigan Athletic and Dunfermline Athletic before being forced to retire from the full-time game in the early noughties due to a knee injury,
Figuring for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Alfreton Town and also enjoying three separate spells with Halifax Town thereafter, Butler has acted as assistant manager for the latter alongside spending four years with Doncaster as their goalkeeping coach prior to his move to Bradford three years ago.
