"We can create enough chances but we have to be ruthless and put the game to bed," says Owen Coyle ahead of the weekend's game at Millwall
Ahead of this weekend’s game against Millwall, Owen Coyle says his side must look to build on their recent performances and add a ruthless touch in front of goal.
Wanderers dominated the opening 45 minutes of Tuesday night’s game with in-form Leeds United, and despite taking a lead and carving out several guilt-edged chances the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
And speaking ahead of the weekend’s trip to Millwall, a ground on which Wanderers won last season, Coyle has called for his side to turn performances into points.
“We very much should have had all three points,” the manager said in his Thursday morning press conference. “There has been no doubt about our performances and how well we have played. As we have said before, we can create enough chances but we have to be ruthless and put the game to bed.
“We are creating opportunities and even the other night we passed and moved the ball well, but in the second half it was a different type of performance. It was a performance of grit and a performance of belief and determination and the fans recognised that and showed the tremendous spirit that we have at the football club.
“There is no doubt moving forward that we have a squad who are capable of winning games and moving ourselves up that league and getting the prize which we all believe we are more than capable of getting.
“We’ve had some uncontrollable go against us. It hasn’t happened once or twice – it has happened almost every other game.
“I stressed that to the players that even when things like that happen we are still good enough to win the games in the face of those decisions.
“Of course, it is frustrating but we have got to stand up and show that the quality we have and the trust and belief. We can’t effect that, we can just make sure we go out and perform to our level and make sure we look to get maximum points in each game.”
“Millwall is a tough game, as they all are in the Championship regardless of the opposition. On Saturday it will be no different and we have to be ready for it and we will be.
“It is not easy and the Championship has shown that with the results on a week-to-week basis. Brighton had been beating everyone to begin with but have failed to pick up a win in their last two home games.
“We have got to be ready to get on that consistent run, and when we do that you will see us flying up the table. We will look to go into the international break with three points and make sure we utilise that time and come back into it at our best and be ready to push on.”
