Ready To Go Again

"The principles we instilled in the players, through video and on the training ground, proved very effective," says interim boss Jimmy Phillips

Jimmy Phillips believes that a similar performance from the weekend can reap another positive result at Molineux on Tuesday evening.

After analysing the statistics and spending the last couple of days reflecting on the win over Bristol City, the interim boss says that he was particularly pleased with the way Wanderers implemented their new ideas into the 90-minute performance on Saturday.

The Whites head to the Black Country looking the chalk up their third successive away win over Wolves.

And whilst acknowledging they will need to start the match in a much quicker fashion, Phillips is assured the players can maintain the high standards that have now been set.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning, he said: “I think it’s been a long time since the team has come back from 2-0 down, like we did on Saturday.

“It was particularly pleasing the manner in which the players played the game and the character and the belief they showed to keep passing the ball and open up the Bristol defence.

“The confidence came back to the players in the second half. The players stuck to the principles and when we were 2-0 down I was actually thinking that they are playing well and getting the ball down and moving it out from the back, like we had asked them to.

“We know we have to brush up on our defence and improve that to make us more resilient because coming from 2-0 down isn’t going to happen every week.

“I think the crowd really enjoyed the comeback and recognised that we were trying to play football. They were very supportive of the team and the players appreciated that.

“I had confidence going into the game because of all the training we had done with the players had been of a first-class nature. All the work that Sammy and Julian had done, along with efforts the support of the support staff, meant that the players had as much information as possible.

“The principles we instilled in them, through video and on the training ground, proved very effective. We knew that would be the case because we have used them before as coaches.

“The previous total passes in a match were around the 350 mark. On Saturday, the team made 450 passes with an 84 percent success rate.

“Jay Spearing and Mark Davies were our top two receivers of the ball and they started off a lot of our forward play – it was exactly the role and responsibilities we gave them.

“They stayed in the midfield area, stretched the play from side to side and Jay timed his run to perfection for his goal.”

Phillips also confirmed that he has no fresh injury concerns from Saturday afternoon.
