U21s: Newcastle 1-1 Bolton

Jamie Fullarton's side secure a point in the North East

Tom Youngs was on the scoresheet for Wanderers’ Under 21 side in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at Whitley Park.

The striker fired home just two minutes after the restart, but the Whites were to be denied all three points as Adam Campbell snatched an equaliser for the Magpies to ensure that the game ended all square.

Following a sprightly start from the Whites, Youngs looked set to hand Jamie Fullarton’s side an early lead when he found himself in acres of space just six yards out, but the youngster somehow managed to fire wide.

Having fired an early warning sign to the hosts, Conor Wilkinson and Jan Gregus both enjoyed chances to put Wanderers in front, but the pair were denied by United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

After withstanding a tirade of Bolton pressure, Newcastle almost grabbed a goal against the run of play through Adam Campbell who pounced on a loose ball and fired from a tight angle, but Andrew Lonergan did well to keep the scores level.

Wanderers were soon back on top in the clash, with Gregus firing a free-kick against the woodwork and Youngs enjoying a handful of chances to open his account, but his efforts were in vain as the first half ended goalless.

Not to be denied however, Youngs fired home from close range just two minutes after the restart to hand Bolton a deserved lead in the clash.

Despite falling behind, the Magpies appeared to find their shooting boots in the wake of Wanderers’ goal with Rolando Aarons and Adam Armstrong trying their luck, with Campbell eventually drawing the home side level with 18 minutes left.

An impressive run down the left by Gabriel Obertan looked certain to produce a goal, with the winger cutting the ball back into the path of Campbell who fired home past Lonergan.

As the clock ticked down, it was to be Newcastle who enjoyed the better chances to snatch all three points with Callum Roberts and Obertan blazing the ball over the crossbar while Zach Clough dragged his shot wide for Wanderers, but the game ended honours even.
