U18s: Middlesbrough 0-3 Bolton

Youngsters secure second successive victory on Teesside

Wanderers’ under-18 side recorded their second successive league win on their travels with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over their Middlesbrough counterparts on Tuesday afternoon.

Following on from Saturday’s 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, David Lee and Tony Kelly’s side made the trip to the north of England hopeful of avenging a 5-0 reverse inflicted on them by the Riverside youngsters back in October.

From the outset it was clear that the Whites were a team on a mission with a number of opportunities going begging and it wasn’t long before their dominance paid dividends with 25 minutes on the clock as Jamie Thomas fired home from a 25-yard free-kick.

No more than Wanderers deserved, the visitors pushed to extend their lead as the half drew to its conclusion and were rewarded just five minutes after the break as following good link-up play between Christopher Cvetko and Carl Kennedy, William Abbotts added to his brace against Wolves at the weekend with a well taken volley.

Well and truly in control of the clash, Bolton proceeded to put the result beyond doubt on moments later as Kennedy again in the thick of the action dissected the Boro defence with a perfectly executed pass into the feet of Cvetko who struck the ball first time to power home from 15 yards out and make it three for the Whites.

Wanderers did enjoy chances to extend their handsome lead during the second half, but the result remained the same at the final whistle.

Speaking after the final whistle, coach Lee praised his young side for their application and professionalism throughout the duration of the clash.

“We totally dominated the game from start to finish which was very pleasing to see,” he said. “We had two under-16 players in the starting line-up combined with four second and five first years, so to produce such a comprehensive performance is a credit to them.

“Their work rate and attitude, combined with some fantastic phases of play, was very pleasing and the players deserve all the plaudits that they get.”

The club’s youngsters will be hoping to continue their fine form of late when they take on their Liverpool counterparts at the Eddie Davies Academy this coming Saturday, kick off 11am.
