Oscar Threlkeld eager to retain position after Bolton return

Versatile defender keen to build on successful loan spell with Plymouth Argyle

Oscar Threlkeld is determined to keep on impressing for Wanderers after returning to the club following a successful loan stint with Plymouth Argyle.

Handed his first Whites appearance of the season against Charlton Athletic, the versatile defender was one of five Bolton youth team graduates included in Jimmy Phillips’ starting XI.

And after putting in a man-of-the-match performance against the Addicks, Threlkeld is eager to make the most of his first team opportunity between now and the end of the season.

“Both defences were key today,” the 22-year-old told bwfc.co.uk after the 0-0 draw at Macron Stadium. “Our defence was class and I thought we played really well.

“We were very unlucky not to get anything from the last game and that was the same again today. We put in a good performance, we just need to take our opportunities in front of goal.

“It was a hard game to play with few clear-cut chances. On another day we would have put away the few opportunities we did get, but sadly it wasn’t to be.

“We all played well and got a good point out of the game. It’s something we can build on. We need to focus on the positives and take them into the next match.”

Threlkeld continued: “Going down to Plymouth was a good experience for me to taste that sort of football. I’ve taken a lot of it and hopefully I can show that on the pitch for Bolton.

“I played in central-midfield and right-back during my time there. It’s important to show versatility to learn different aspects of the game and positions. I don’t mind where I play as long as I am in the team.

“It’s always good to play with the lads who have progressed through the academy as we have played together for a while.

“We know what position each other will be in when we get the ball. It’s good to play with the more senior players too as they help us all with the experience they bring to the side.

“It’s a team game but an individual spot. I’m fighting for the place and I need to keep playing well to keep the position.”
