In his own words: Phil Parkinson post-Sheffield Wednesday

Wanderers returned to winning ways after an enthralling display in Round Three of the Carabao Cup against Sheffield Wednesday at Macron Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goals from Dorian Dervite, Adam Armstrong and Jem Karacan clinched a 3-2 victory over the Owls in a fiery contest to secure their passage to the next stage of the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to bwfc.co.uk following the final whistle, manager Phil Parkinson covered the following points...

On his side’s performance…

I’m very pleased to win tonight I think for the confidence of everybody it was important.

At 3-0 it was a very comfortable evening, the subs they made changed it a bit, but all in all, it was a good night’s work for us and there was some big performances out there tonight.

On his side’s progression to Round 3 of the Carabao Cup…

Without doubt, it was a massive win for us tonight.

The big guns now come in so it also gives us an opportunity to draw one of those sides.

More importantly, I think we’ve shown tonight that if we play like we know we can then we can compete with anybody at this level.

Sheffield Wednesday picked a very strong team tonight and we performed very well. We didn’t give cheap goals away, we stayed in the game and I thought we broke very well with the speed of both Adam (Armstrong) and Will (Buckley).

How important was tonight’s victory for morale…

We needed a win to lift everybody.

They are a good group of lads who are trying very hard and are determined to do well. Tonight’s performance shows everybody what can be achieved.

On tonight’s rotated side…

I really have some tough decisions to make now for Friday and that’s the great thing about tonight.

We made seven changes and you can easily mention all of the lads that have come in and individually say how well they’ve done.

There were some excellent performances and I think everyone will be very pleased with themselves.

On tonight’s goalscorers…

I’m pleased for Dorian (Dervite), we knew set-pieces were going to be important for us tonight and he managed to get an important goal following one.

Adam Armstrong played like we know he can. He’s a young player, he’s learning all the time and I thought he was electric tonight.

Jem (Karacan) captained the team tonight and put in a captain’s performance. He covered every blade of grass and even managed to get into the box and get himself a goal.

On Round 3 of the Carabao Cup…

I don’t have any preference.

We have to compete like we did tonight and show what we can. I’m also hoping we have a few more league points on the board by then.

And finally to Friday night’s Sky Bet Championship fixture vs. Hull…

We look forward to that one against another big team and we have to dust ourselves down following tonight.

We want to concentrate on our own performance levels and play like we did against Sheffield Wednesday. If we do that we won’t be far from getting three points on Friday night.
