Wheater urges Wanderers to build on a positive start

Wanderers got off to the best possible start to the 2018/19 season with a late victory at West Bromwich Albion on the opening weekend of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The longest serving player in the squad and an experienced head, David Wheater established the importance of building on win number one of the season, after captaining Phil Parkinson's side to three points at The Hawthorns.

The central defender said: It’s only the first game and there’s a long season to go, but it sets us up for a cracking game against Bristol City.

Hopefully we can get the three points and just kick on from there, because I think we’ll surprise a lot of people this season with the squad that we’ve got.

Everyone is a hard worker and we have some really good footballers in the group.

It took us about 11 games to get this many points last season, so it’s already a better start than last season.

Hopefully we can kick on now, and I don’t see why we can’t. West Brom are one of the best teams in the league and I don’t see any reason why we can’t go toe to toe with the better teams in the league, every week.

It’s massive that we look to build on this, and it won’t mean a thing if we go and lose the next few games, because we won’t be anywhere.

We don’t have a mid-week game coming up so we’ll be on the training pitch, working hard as normal and then we’ll kick on. Hopefully, we can get another victory on Saturday.

Wanderers are back in Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday (11 August) at the University of Bolton Stadium, with Lee Johnson's Bristol City the visitors.
