Report: Leeds United U23s 2-0 Bolton Wanderers U23s

18 February 2019

Two goals in two minutes gave Leeds United the 2-0 advantage that they ended the game with against Bolton U23s at Elland Road.

Jordan Stevens opened the scoring and Robbie Gotts doubled their lead just a minute later.

Skipper Hugo Diaz made both goals, slotting a low pass through the middle of the Wanderers backline for the well-timed run of Stevens.

The forward’s first touch took him around the onrushing Jake Turner, his second was to finish from a tight angle.

For United’s second, a lofted ball from the Spaniard was met by Gotts. He controlled with his chest before looping his finish over Turner.

Bolton weren’t without their chances, hitting the post twice in the first half and having a one-on-one situation denied by Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The best opening came in the first half, falling to Connor Hall, who was bearing down on goal one-on-one with Peacock-Farrell, but with the ball bobbling and bouncing he could only direct a low effort into the Northern Irishman’s legs.

The Trotters kept threatening, with Joe Williams striking low and hard from distance but his effort struck the foot of Leeds’ post and clear.

One of the few first team players involved, Erhun Oztumer, fashioned himself a chance also; twisting and turning on the edge of the Leeds box, creating enough space to try to bend an effort at goal.

His shot was just past the post but had Peacock-Farrell scrambling as it clipped the post on the way out for a goal kick

But in the second half Leeds took more of a hold of proceedings, breaking at pace and linking up well with each other.

Despite the increase in possession for the hosts, Turner was rarely tested in the Wanderers goal and Leeds needed some last gasp blocks to prevent tap-ins for Hall.

The game was an even affair where a quick flurry of goals decided it, despite a good Wanderers showing.

Leeds United: Peacock-Farrell; Hosannah, Berardi (Davis, 45), Halme, Oduor; Diaz, Brown (McCalmont, 45), Gotts; Dallas (Stevens, 45), Edmondson, Kamwa.

Bolton Wanderers: Turner; Little (Navarro, 90), Zouma, Warren, Johnson; Earing, Williams (Jones-Griffiths, 45), Brockbank, Tanimowo (Darcy, 59); Oztumer, Hall.
