Youth Team Report: Bolton Wanderers 5-1 Oldham Athletic

The Young Whites lost their first game of the season with a 3-2 home defeat to Salford City.

Having twice taken the lead, Bolton failed to capitalise on their chances and allowed Salford to steal all three points with two goals mid-way through the second half as a result of individual mistakes from the young Wanderers defenders.

Bolton got off to a flying start with Daniel Jones opening the scoring inside the first minute with a fantastic drive into the top corner from just outside the 18-yard-box.

Salford were quick to level after Bolton couldn't clear a corner and the Salford player headed in on the line.

The longer the game went on, Bolton grew stronger and were unlucky not to take the lead as Ryan Colvin had a great header saved on the line. From there, the Wanderers trio Max Wilcox, Lamine Toure and Daniel Jones all went close.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Bolton playing some great football and creating many opportunities.

The patience was rewarded when Lamine Toure finished from close range after good work from Mitchell Henry.

However, the lead didn't last long, as Salford pounced on a catalogue of mistakes from the Young Whites and brought the game level.

Against the run of play, Salford once again stole the ball high up the pitch and took the lead for the first time in the game.

Bolton continued to push forward in search of the equaliser and missed some crucial chances to draw the game level.

Academy Manager Mark Litherland said: "Today we played some great football and created so many chances to win the game and score five or six goals.

“When we were 2-1 up, we missed three really good chances to kill the game off.

“It’s so disappointing that we kept giving Salford opportunities through individual mistakes.

“This group of players has so much potential and are playing the game the right way, but we need to cut out the silly mistakes and be able to to defend our lead better."
