FRIENDLY: Wigan Athletic U21s 0 Wanderers B 2

The B Team enjoyed an excellent work-out at Wigan as the Whites’ youngsters recorded a 2-0 friendly win.

Matt Craddock’s side has played a number of friendly fixtures in recent weeks to top up their competitive campaign in the Central League and League Cup.

And after losses to Burnley and Stockport County’s B team, Wanderers produced an impressive performance to overcome a Wigan U21 side containing a number of players with first-team experience as they topped up their match fitness.

The Whites had a chance to go ahead at Wigan’s Christopher Park training ground when second-year scholar Noah Halford lifted an effort over the bar following a free-kick.

But 10 minutes before half-time Wanderers did go in front when Wes Frimpong made space to deliver a low cross which was spilled by goalkeeper Sam Tickle and wing-back Sam Inwood arrived from the opposite flank to tap in the loose ball.

Wigan - who play their Academy football in the Professional Development League - almost levelled when ex-Lincoln City man Anthony Scully struck the bar and the home side enjoyed plenty of possession after the break.

But a well-organised Wanderers’ side showed great discipline to limit the threat on Luke Hutchinson’s goal.

The Whites also carried a threat on the break and with an hour gone doubled their lead with a superb strike from Lockett to give them the cushion to complete a comfortable victory.

Midfielder Matty Tweedley set up the opportunity when he won an excellent tackle and then fed the lively Lockett, who was close to 25 yards out when he sized up a shot he curled into the top corner to cap a fine afternoon’s work.

The B Team is next in action at home to Fleetwood Town in the Central League next Tuesday afternoon (18 April) KO 2pm.
