A look ahead at Monday's clash with the Magpies
Wanderers’ Under 21 side make the trip to the North East on Monday evening looking to bounce back to winning ways against Newcastle United.
Having fallen to a 4-0 defeat against Manchester United in the Manchester FA Senior Challenge Cup last week, Jamie Fullarton’s side will be hopeful of taking advantage of the Magpies’ inconsistent form of late.
With three defeats, a draw and two victories in their opening six games, Willie Donachie’s side have struggled to make their mark so far this season, but will be looking to avenge Bolton’s 2-1 win in this fixture back in May.
Entering the game on the back of a rollercoaster clash with West Bromwich Albion last week which saw the Magpies eventually run out 4-3 winners, Newcastle will be hoping to kick-start their season against the Whites.
Adam Armstrong will certainly be hoping to add to his tally of five goals in as many games when the two sides clash, with the 16-year-old striker having snatched a late winner against the Baggies at the Hawthorns.
The Newcastle-born centre forward however will have competition in the goal scoring stakes, with Wanderers’ own Zach Clough currently making a name for himself in the club’s Under 21 set-up.
A product of the club’s academy, Clough notched a brace against Blackburn Rovers a fortnight ago and looks set for a bright future at the Reebok.
Fullarton looks likely to name a similar starting line-up to that which turned out against the Red Devils, but may be forced to make changes should Conor Wilkinson, Chris Lester and Cian Bolger be called up to play for their respective countries having been put on stand-by.
For supporters wishing to attend the game, the game kicks off at 7pm and will be held at Whitley Park, Whitley Road, Benton, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE12 9SF.
