Forward scores just before half time as Ireland lose 3-1 to Lithuania
Conor Wilkinson scored for Republic of Ireland on Friday, but it was not enough to prevent them losing to Lithuania in their latest 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier.Having fallen behind to a Lukas Spalvis header midway through the first half in Vilnius, the forward, currently on loan at League One Barnsley, was unfortunately not to equalise soon after as he saw his header cannon back off the crossbar.
However, Wilkinson was not to be denied much longer as he got Ireland back on level-terms shortly before the break with a rasping 20-yard strike.
But the Irish's celebrations were cut short as Simonas Stankevicius restored Lithuania's lead less than a minute later, before Donatas Kazlauskas sealed the points in the second half.
After leading Group 2 Ireland now slip to fourth place, while they are next in action against Norway on Tuesday 17 November.
