Flashback: Wanderers' FA Cup third round memories

Wanderers' official site takes a trip down memory lane ahead of Tuesday night's Emirates FA Cup third round replay

With Wanderers once again set to pit their wits against Vanarama National League side Eastleigh, bwfc.co.uk casts an eye back over some of the club’s most memorable third round efforts from yesteryear.

1) Liverpool 0-2 Bolton Wanderers (January 13, 1993)

Having initially hosted the Reds at Burnden Park just ten days earlier – a game which finished 2-2 with a Mark Winstanley own goal and Ian Rush strike cancelling out the Whites’ two goal lead earned with efforts from John McGinlay and Mark Seagraves, many had expected the replay to be something of a forgone conclusion.

Coming up against the then-holders of the cup however, Wanderers weren’t overwhelmed by the occasion and proceeded to go one better at Anfield by running out comfortable winners on the night 23 years ago.

With David Lee running riot all evening, providing the cross for McGinlay to open the scoring early on, the Scotland striker then turned provider for Andy Walker who added a second to ensure a memorable victory for the Whites.

Although eventually departing the competition in the fifth round following a 3-1 defeat to Derby County, it wasn’t to matter as the Whites had already written their names into the history books.

2) Bolton Wanderers 1-0 Wigan Athletic (January 3, 2015)

Academy graduate Zach Clough scored on his debut to secure Wanderers the bragging rights over local rivals Wigan and a place in the hat for the next round a year ago this month.

With a replay looming, then-19-year-old Clough went one-on-one with keeper Ali Al Habsi with 76 minutes on the clock and dinked a shot over the Latics goalkeeper to break the deadlock.

The Latics were unable to find a response in the clash as Bolton held out, with them going on to hold Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield in the fourth round before late heartbreak in the replay saw them denied a trip to Crystal Palace in the last 16 of the competition.

3) Doncaster Rovers 0-4 Bolton Wanderers (January 6, 2007)

Wanderers progressed in the third round of the FA Cup courtesy of 4-0 victory away at Doncaster Rovers some nine years ago.

With Kevin Davies opening the scoring at the Keepmoat Stadium, Andranik Teymourian notched a brace while Idan Tal also found the back of the net as the Whites ran out comfortable winners to set up a fourth round tie away at Arsenal.

After earning a replay against the Gunners however with a 1-1 draw, Bolton eventually bowed out of the competition at the Reebok Stadium 3-1 after extra time.

4) Bolton Wanderers 4-0 Lincoln City (January 2, 2010)

Six years ago this month, the Whites recorded an emphatic victory over then-League Two outfit Lincoln City to book their place in the fourth round of the cup.

Bolton took to the field for the first time since parting ways with previous manager Gary Megson and saw their opponents frustrate them during a goalless first period at BL6.

Just as the magic of the cup had threatened to fall in City’s favour however, the floodgates opened for the Whites with Moses Swaibu deflecting a Matt Taylor pass into his own net shortly after the break.

Lee Chung-Yong then doubled the host’s advantage two minutes later, before a late showing in the form of goals from Gary Cahill and Kevin Davies ensured a handsome scoreline for the Trotters at the final whistle.

Wanderers went on to reach the fifth round of the competition that season, finally exiting the tournament following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in a replay at White Hart Lane.

5) Ipswich Town 1-3 Bolton Wanderers (January 8, 2005)

Bolton swept aside the challenge of Ipswich Town as they comfortably secured a third-round victory over the Tractor Boys at Portman Road 11 years ago.

Following a goalless first half, Wanderers hit the hosts with three goals in eight minutes with Stelios Giannokopoulos tucking away the first from El-Hadj Diouf's pass before Henrik Pedersen scored with two angled drives from the left of the box.

Tommy Miller did side-foot Town a consolation goal from Pablo Counago's pass with 20 minutes remaining, but the damage was already done as the Trotters progressed in the tournament, making it all the way to the quarter finals where they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal.
