Manager says increasing fitness levels can lead to further impressive performances from the Brazlian
Neil Lennon says there is more to come from the on-loan Wellington Silva.
The Brazilian, on-loan from Arsenal, played an influential role during Bolton’s 3-1 win over MK Dons at the weekend, completing ten successful dribbles, twice as many as anyone else on the pitch.
And after missing out on a pre-season and a preview spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, the manager now believes that Wellington has the perfect platform at Bolton to kick on and further his development.
“Wellington lit up the stadium at the weekend,” Lennon said. “There’s no doubting that everyone enjoys watching that type of player, nobody more so than myself.
“He’s been a bit of a slow burner for us this season. He missed out on a pre-season and then had a long absence with a hamstring injury, but he’s starting to come to the fore now.
“We do feel like he needs to be a bit fitter, because he maybe doesn’t finish games as well as he starts them. That said, for the 85 minutes he was on against MK Dons he was phenomenal.
“He’s an eliminator, someone that likes to go past players and you don’t often see that in the modern day. He gets the crowd off their feet and frustrates opponents.
“Sometimes when he gets the better of a defender, he does come in for a bit of rough treatment. Again, that’s part of the game he’s going to have to learn, but he’s coped very well so far and does have that fire in his belly.”
