Zach Clough in derby delight

The forward's first goals of the season saw Wanderers beat Oldham Athletic

Zach Clough was thrilled to score his first goals of the season as Wanderers beat local-rivals Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

Having endured a stop-start start to the campaign because of injury, the forward opened the scoring early on against the Latics with a trademark free-kick, before sealing the win late on with a real poacher's effort.

Three points saw the Whites move up to third in the Sky Bet League One table as they claimed their third successive victory and clean sheet in all competitions.

Relieved to be up and running for the campaign, Clough shared his delight with bwfc.co.uk after the final whistle.

“I can’t explain how happy I am because I really needed the goals to kick-start the season,” said the 21-year-old. “I know I’ve not played as many games as I would have liked because of injury.

“It’s been frustrating, but now I’m glad to have my season up and running.

“The first goal was a good goal and I’m very happy with it. I think that’s my third free-kick at senior level. I really like taking free-kicks and I was so pleased to see it go in.

“For the second one, Josh had his shot saved by the keeper and it just fell to me. I’ve got a bit of luck and guided in into the top corner, off the crossbar and in.

“I like playing on the left because I cut inside onto my right foot. It’s perfect for me. I like being in the number ten role but I can still drift central and have some shots, which I love doing.”

Clough continued: “It’s great to climb a few places as this is where we’re aiming to be. It was our aim to remain in the top six travelling down to Millwall and we’re delighted that that is the case.

“Now we need to go again and see where it takes us on Tuesday.

“I love it under the gaffer. He’s a great man-manager and is excellent with all the players.

“He’s rebuilt a great team and I think we have a stronger squad this year. The back four are excellent.

“Wheats, Beevs, Lawrie and Tayls were all superb and I think that is going to be our platform for the rest of the season.

“We won’t concede many goals with a back four like that and we have a really good chance of having a good go at it this year."
