Bolton Wanderers sign up to support Responsible Gambling Week

Bolton Wanderers have today announced the club’s support for Responsible Gambling Week, an industry-wide campaign to trigger a national conversation about what it means to gamble responsibly.

#RGWeek18 will take place from November 1st – 7th under the slogan ‘Let’s Talk about Responsible Gambling’ and this marks the first year that EFL clubs are participating.

Bolton Wanderers' support will encompass publishing information on #RGWeek18 on the club website, and sharing social media posts throughout the week detailing the five key responsible gambling behaviours:

  • Only spend what you can afford
  • Set your limits for time and money
  • Gambling is not the answer to any problem
  • Gambling when angry or upset is not a good idea
  • Gambling shouldn’t interfere with your personal relationships

The event is being organised by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling (IGRG), which through its member trade associations, encompasses all sectors of the gambling industry: online, amusement arcades, bingo clubs, bookmakers and casinos. #RGWeek18 also includes Ireland for the first time, where the campaign will be supported by more than 800 bookmakers, and by the Arcades Association, the Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland and the Irish Greyhound and Horse Racing Tote.

At the gambling venues, responsible gambling literature will be available to customers, designed to trigger conversations about how to keep gambling fun and safe. Customers who need further help or information will be signposted to GambleAware, an independent charity which funds research, education and treatment, and is supporting Responsible Gambling Week.

Among the initiatives taking place during the week, are a series of free training sessions for teachers, community workers and other professionals who work with young people. Run by GamCare, these “train the trainer” sessions provide information on how to talk to young people about gambling and where to seek help if they need it. The Young Gamblers Education Trust (YGam) is running a number of Peer education events for university students in their partner universities.

John Hagan, Chairman of the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling, said:

“We’re delighted that Bolton Wanderers will be supporting Responsible Gambling Week. As an industry we are dedicated, year-round to promoting responsible gambling, but what makes Responsible Gambling Week special is the opportunity for gambling operators from every sector to unite behind the same message and engage in a national conversation about what it means to gamble responsibly. The engagement and support of football clubs is enormously helpful in highlighting the week.”
