Brunt | We Can Compete At This Level

Lewis Brunt - home

Lewis Brunt believes Tuesday's win at Molineux shows Wanderers can compete in the Championship, and he wants the squad to carry that confidence to St Mary's on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The defender started the 3-1 victory over Wolves after a short spell out injured, as Steven Schumacher made five changes from the side beaten 2-1 at home by Stoke City.

Brunt told Wanderers TV: "Yeah, really enjoyed it being back out there with the lads. It was a great night.

"It's really positive. Obviously, the group after the game were bouncing. So, hopefully we can use that feeling to take into the weekend."

On the changes to the starting line-up, he added: "I think it just shows how good the squad is, that you can make five changes and still go and put on a performance."

Brunt, who joined from Wrexham in the summer, used the international break to make sure he was fully fit before returning.

"No player wants to be sat on the physio bed," he said. "Luckily, it was only a couple of weeks, but yeah, it feels great to be back out there.

"I think the international break probably came at a good time where I could not rush anything and make sure it was 100 per cent before getting back."

Wanderers sit 14th after 10 games of their first season back in the Championship, and Brunt is encouraged by the start.

"I think it's been mainly positive," he said. "You only have to look at Tuesday night, you know, going away to a Premier League team. It just gives us confidence that we can definitely compete at this level."

The defender also praised Schumacher's approach: "I think he's been great. Sticking to the game plan, game by game, and so far, I think on the whole it's been working. So, it's really, really positive."

Next up is a trip to Tonda Eckert's Southampton, and Brunt wants more of the same.

"No fixture in this league is easy, but that's probably one of the tougher ones you'll look at when you look at the fixtures," he said. "But like I said, we'll take the confidence from Tuesday night and try and replicate it on the weekend."

Asked about Wanderers being seen as underdogs, Brunt replied: "I think it's just because we're a team that's come up from League One. As you've seen on Tuesday night, we can compete at this level, so it's just taking that confidence and putting it into every game, no matter who we're playing."

Brunt also paid tribute to the travelling supporters who backed the team at Molineux.

"It's massive," he said. "Before I joined the club, I knew how good the supporters were and what the stadium and the away fans can be like, so it's been really good."
