Julian Darby hailed the best performance so far this season from the U21s as they made it three wins out of three to stay top of the Professional Development League.
Two more goals from top scorer Daeshon Lawrence and a second of the season for new recruit Max Lott secured a 3-1 win over Coventry City at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
And Darby was delighted with an attack-minded display which extended the positive start the Whites have made in their new surroundings of the PDL.
“It’s probably the best we've played so far this season against Coventry City, who are now a Premier League team again, so it was great to pick their wits and on the stadium as well,” said the U21s’ coach, whose playing career had included a spell in the top tier with the Sky Blues.
“At the end of the day, these boys want to play on there every other week and I thought there were some very good performances today.
“Fair play to the under-18s and the under-17s who've come in today, as well, and come on as subs. Everyone played their part, the way they defended and the way they attacked.
“They're playing with a bit of confidence at the minute, the boys. There was some good stuff going forward and at the back we look quite solid.
“Unfortunately, that was our first goal we conceded this year in the league but as for goals scored, what are we on now? I think we're on 11, so that's pleasing. It's entertaining and it's positive and that’s all I can ask the lads to be really.”
Wanderers came from behind to maintain their 100 per cent start and entertain a crowd that gets a chance to watch the young Whites again on Friday night when they take on Southampton in the Premier League Cup.
An opening defeat in Group A of the competition to Queens Park Rangers is the Whites’ only reverse so far this season but Darby knows they will face another tough test against the Saints, who beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 in their first group game and play their football in Premier League 2.
“I said to the lads they have to look after themselves now because they've got another game in four days and that might be the hardest game they play all season,” Darby added.
“They are a Category One (academy) side who have started the season well, so it’ll be a tough, tough game. We lost to QPR in the first game of the season as well, so we could really do with picking something up from that game.”
