Bolton Wanderers Football Club confirms that midfielder George Thomason has today completed a permanent transfer to Wrexham for an undisclosed fee.
Thomason ends an impressive stay with the Whites, where he had been the club’s longest serving player and one of Wanderers’ best-value signings of recent times.
The 24-year-old former Blackpool junior joined Wanderers from non-league Longridge Town in January, 2020 and went on to make 169 appearances and captain the club.
After two loan spells with Bamber Bridge, Thomason broke into Wanderers’ first team towards the end of 2020 and quickly became part of the side that won promotion from League Two the following summer to earn the Whites’ Young Player of the Year award for 2020/21.
He established himself as a key member of the squad that reached the League One play-offs for two seasons running and won the EFL Trophy in 2023, and last September was named captain by former manager Ian Evatt.
Head Coach Steven Schumacher said: “George has been an excellent servant to this football club. His development here is a credit to his own hard work and the environment we aim to create.
"We are constantly evaluating the squad to ensure we have the right profile to achieve our ultimate objective and sometimes that process involves making difficult decisions.
"This move represents a good opportunity for George. It also provides value to the club that we can use to continue strengthening. We thank him for his fantastic contribution and wish him nothing but success for the future.”
Thomason started 35 games in League One last season with one of his four goals – against Blackpool – chosen as Wanderers’ goal of the season and leaves the Toughsheet Community Stadium with the thanks of everyone at Wanderers and best wishes for the remainder of his career.
George sat down with the club before his move to the Welsh side in a farewell interview - including a message to Wanderers fans - to reflect on his five years at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Click below to watch.
