Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of Japan international midfielder Atsuki Ito from Belgian Pro League side KAA Gent for an undisclosed fee, subject to EFL, international clearance and visa approval.
The 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and becomes Steven Schumacher's eleventh addition of a busy summer window, following David Watson, Ben Davies, Akin Famewo, Luca Stephenson, Kyliane Dong, Gaizka Larrazabal, Ryan Hardie, Lewis Brunt, Samuel Iling-Junior and Jayden Nelson.
A 6ft 1in central midfielder who is equally comfortable screening the back four or driving beyond the ball, Ito arrives at Wanderers with more than 250 senior appearances behind him and a decorated career on two continents.
Born in Urawa, Saitama, Ito came through the youth ranks at his boyhood club Urawa Red Diamonds but was not offered a professional contract as a teenager. He took the university route instead, joining Ryutsu Keizai University in 2017 and forcing his way into their first team within months, before Urawa brought him back and handed him a full professional deal in February 2021.
What followed was a run of 173 appearances and 19 goals for the Reds across all competitions. He was a J1 League Best XI selection and winner of the J1 Outstanding Player Award in 2023, the same year he started in the AFC Champions League final as Urawa beat Al Hilal to lift a third Asian title in front of a packed Saitama Stadium. He also won the Emperor's Cup in 2021 and the Japanese Super Cup in 2022 and represented Urawa at the FIFA Club World Cup.
In July 2024, Ito was named club captain - an appointment his head coach said was made ‘without hesitation.’
Ito moved to Gent in August 2024 and made an immediate impact in Belgium, going on to make 79 appearances and score seven goals across two seasons in the Jupiler Pro League.
He also has European experience in the bank, featuring nine times in the 2024/25 UEFA Conference League as Gent came through qualifying, negotiated the league phase and reached the knockout play-off round, where they were edged out by Real Betis.
On the international stage, Ito has three senior caps for Japan and marked his first start with a goal in a 4-2 win over Turkey in September 2023.
Ito becomes the fourth Japanese player to represent Bolton Wanderers and the first to join the club on a permanent transfer.
Striker Akinori Nishizawa was the first, arriving on loan from Espanyol in July 2001 and scoring a dramatic late equaliser in a 4-3 League Cup win over Walsall - one of three appearances before returning to Spain in January 2002.
Midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata, one of the finest players his country has produced and a 77-cap Japan international, spent the 2005/06 campaign on loan from Fiorentina, making 32 appearances in all competitions and scoring in a 2-0 Premier League win over West Bromwich Albion. It proved to be the final season of his career.
Winger Ryo Miyaichi joined on loan from Arsenal in January 2012 and made 14 appearances, scoring in an FA Cup win at Millwall and winning the club's Player of the Month award for February.
Speaking to bwfc.co.uk, Ito said: “Playing in the English Championship is going to be a big challenge for me and I'm really happy to be able to play for a club with this much history. I want to make sure I deliver results here.”
He revealed the strength of the club's approach was decisive: “I had a really passionate approach from the club and it made me want to play here. I want to give everything I have to live up to that expectation.”
On the role he expects to play, Ito added: “Whether it's as a number eight or a number ten, I believe I can play with quality anywhere - but my best position is the eight. Box-to-box is my strength. If I can show that, I can help the team win and I can live up to the supporters' expectations.”
And on what awaits him: “I can't wait to play in front of the supporters in this fantastic stadium as soon as I can, and I want to give everything to help the team win.”
