The Wanderers are back on the road this week, with our first stop taking place in the capital, taking on Charlton Athletic on a Tuesday night at The Valley.
Steven Schumacher’s men begin another week on the road, after two home fixtures with the Whites in 19th position ahead of the fixture under the lights in SE7.
Charlton have had a tough season thus far. Despite a positive early run of form – managing to pick up three wins from their first four competitive games – The Addicks are currently 10 games without a win, struggling in 20th in the Championship table.
Last time out against Charlton, we hosted the London side last January in League One. The visitors came out on top, with the Wanderers looking to make it right on Tuesday night.
Form Guide:
Looking to bounce back from the defeat against Middlesbrough, the Wanderers hosted Bristol City at home. A wonder goal by Josh Sheehan and a deft touch in front of goal by Sam Dalby were not enough, however, as the Robins came away with all three points on Saturday.
Nathan Jones’ side are still searching for a first win in ten games, with their last game coming against Middlesbrough in a tough away fixture. The Teesiders’ came out on top, coming away as three-nil victors on Saturday afternoon.
What they say:
Steven Schumacher: “I think it’s a realisation in this league that you can do a lot of good things right. And I thought we played well, felt we played well on the day and having watched it back yesterday and gone over it with the players, I’m even more convinced of that. We were in such complete control of the game for large parts of it, and their goals came pretty much against the run of play in all of them. There were no spells of sustained pressure they were putting us under, and we do need to get better at this.
“We’re confident that we can get points at home or away. Doesn’t matter where it is, as long as we play well and we commit to what we’re trying to do for the whole game, and as I say, try not to make mistakes. But winning at Norwich, winning at Wolves and getting a point at Southampton, that should give you the belief in the messages we’re saying and that the players have proved already this season that they’re giving 100% effort. Now, if we just concentrate and cut out the errors, then we will continue to pick up points."
Nathan Jones: “We conceded really poor goals [against Middlesbrough], absolutely terrible goals. When you concede goals like that, you have no chance of winning the game. That’s what we’re doing at the moment. We’re conceding goals, even though we used to be a team that was difficult to beat, very disciplined and aggressive. We’re not that team, we’re a different version of it now.
“We’re looking at it positively [the game against the Wanderers], and we need to get a result, because, as I said, if the results and performances don’t improve, something will change. It’s purely about getting a result this week. We’ll see who we believe can get a result for us and go from there.”
Who to watch:
Tyreece Campbell is one to keep a keen eye on going into this fixture. The left-winger is the Addicks top scorer in all competitions, sitting on five goals heading into the fixture. A current Jamaican international, the 23-year-old – who came through the Charlton Academy as a youngster- has thirteen appearances under Nathan Jones this season, and will be looking to add to his tallies on Tuesday night.
Team News:
Steven Schumacher remains without Jayden Nelson, Ethan Erhahon, Eoin Toal, John McAtee and Ryan Hardie heading into Tuesday night. Chris Forino looks set to line up for the Whites again, as his substitution against Bristol City was put down to cramp. Gavin Bazunu looks unlikely to play in London on Tuesday night, as he recovers from an injury setback which also kept him out of Saturday’s fixture.
Nathan Jones is without long-term absentees Rob Apter and Collins Sichenje. Rob – who spent the end of last season on loan with Whites, making 13 appearances – underwent knee surgery in October and is set to remain out long-term. Collins – who joined from Serbian side FK Vojvodina in February – is out for the season, after also suffering a knee injury, this time in their Carabao Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur. There was a bonus for The Addicks, as defensive-midfielder Nathanial Chalobah returned to competitive action on Saturday against Middlesbrough, while centre-forward Matty Godden is nearing a return from a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since the early part of the season.
