Match Preview | Wanderers v Port Vale

Preview

Wanderers’ defence of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy continues on Tuesday night as Port Vale visit the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

After topping the group stage of the competition, the Valiants stand between Ian Evatt’s men and the Round of 16.

Manager quotes

Ian Evatt: “It’s another opportunity to progress and it’s another football match we want to win.

“This is a competition that we have extremely fond memories of. People will obviously say that the league is more important and we understand that but if you look at Plymouth last year, they got to the final and won the title and Rotherham did the year before so you can do both.

“Our squad is strong enough to be able to cope. We’re looking forward to the game and hopefully we can get through.”

Team News

With two weeks between playing Oxford and Portsmouth in the league, Ian Evatt has said he needs to keep his squad ‘sharp’ in order to sustain a ‘rhythm and momentum’ and will be aiming to keep the minutes topped up throughout the squad.

Randell Williams and Zac Ashworth both returned to action on Saturday to further bolster the Boss’ options.

Form guide

Vale advanced to this stage of the competition after finishing as runner-up in Group B. A win against local rivals Crewe, a draw against Newcastle United u21s and a defeat against Wrexham was enough to progress.

In general, Andy Crosby’s side have found wins hard to come by of late in League One however their cup form has brought the best out of Vale. A remarkable Carabao Cup run is still ongoing as they prepare to take on Middlesborough in quarter-final in that competition.

Wanderers fought off Harrogate Town in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday to advance to the third round and extend their unbeaten run to ten in all competitions.

In the group stage, the Whites won all three of their fixtures and topped the group with wins against Salford City, Manchester United u21s and Stockport County.
