Ten-man Wanderers were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 1-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.
Jamal Lowe's second-half goal proved decisive, with Wanderers having Xavier Simons sent off for an off the ball incident with Harry Gray.
Head Coach Steven Schumacher handed competitive debuts to four of his summer signings, with Luca Stephenson, Ben Davies, Akin Famewo and Gaizka Larrazabal starting in South Yorkshire.
Early on, Owls captain Barry Bannan found former Wanderers loanee Mason Burstow on the right, the forward aimed a cross into the six-yard box, but Chris Forino was well-positioned to clear.
Wanderers, playing in their brand-new burgundy away kit, went close inside the opening six minutes when Thierry Gale drove down the left before pulling the ball back for Stephenson to shoot on the slide which dropped to Sam Dalby, who poked the ball just wide of Joe Lumley's bottom left-post.
Schumacher's men threatened the hosts defence again minutes later, as Gale delivered an enticing cross for Ruben Rodrigues to meet in the box, however his snapshot across goal was off target.
At the other end, Callum Slattery struck an effort from 25-yards which swerved past Jack Bonham's far-post for Henrik Pedersen's Wednesday. .
Wanderers were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position after Rodrigues was fouled by Gabriel Otegbayo. Rodrigues stepped up himself to take the resulting set-piece, but his low right-footed attempt was held by Lumley.
Midway through the half, Larrazabal cut inside on the right to deliver a neat pull-back, with Simons close to profiting from the Spaniard's industrious build-up play, but Wednesday cleared under pressure.
On the half-hour mark, Rodrigues could not keep his header down after being picked out by Gale, as Wanderers pushed for an opener.
Towards the end of the half, Bannan's pass set Gray free to send in a cross from the left, with Famewo in the right place to head clear as Burstow lurked at the back post.
Gray then turned provider to tee up Jordi Liongola, who curled a rising shot with his right boot over Bonham's crossbar, a chance which proved to be the final one of the half.
Wednesday created the first opportunities of the second-half. Firstly, Max Lowe chased onto Liongola's cross towards the back post but could not get the required collection when sliding in. Bonham then had to stand up tall to keep out Gray's attempted chip.
Wanderers were reduced to 10 men by referee Elliot Bell on 56 minutes after Simons was sent off for an off the ball incident on Gray, having initially been brought down by the Wednesday forward.

Wednesday led with 70 minutes played after Bannan clipped a lofted pass for Lowe to run onto and dink a left-footed shot over Bonham which found the bottom right-corner.
Bonham was called into action eight minutes later when Bannan's corner dropped to Sil Swinkels in the box, with the Wanderers stopper pushing the close-range attempt over the crossbar.
The Whites were unable to find an elusive equaliser and exit the Carabao Cup at the first-round stage.
