Supporters may already recognise Xiomara ‘Xio’ Rodriguez from her appearances in Wanderers colours this season.
Now it is time to properly introduce the versatile Mexican-American midfielder who joined the Whites during the summer and has been steadily establishing herself within Tom Cunniff’s squad.
After missing a significant part of pre-season, Rodriguez has remained patient, worked hard on the training ground and gradually increased her involvement.
“It’s been a really exciting few months,” said Xio. “Coming into a new environment and getting to train and play alongside the squad has been a great experience for me.
“I’ve had to be patient and work hard to build my minutes, especially after missing a big part of pre-season, but I feel like I’m settling in more every week.
“I’m really enjoying being part of the group and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop and contribute to the team.”
Born in Oceanside, California, the 21-year-old began playing football at the age of five with her first club, Oceanside Breakers.
Her footballing journey has since included spells with IFG Macclesfield, Macclesfield Women and Blackburn Rovers, as well as winning the NYFL League title with IFG Macclesfield during the 2024/25 season.
Moving from California to pursue her ambitions in England remains one of the proudest achievements of her career.
“It’s been a massive experience for me,” she added. “Coming from Oceanside, California, to playing football in England has definitely been an adjustment, both on and off the pitch.
“The biggest difference has probably been the intensity and the standards around football here. I’ve had to adapt to a different style of football and a different environment, but it’s taught me to be more adaptable, independent and resilient.
“I think the experience has definitely helped me grow, not just as a player but as a person too.”
Primarily a central midfielder, Rodriguez can also operate at centre-back and brings composure, adaptability and a strong work ethic to the Wanderers squad.
“I enjoy being involved in the game, whether that’s helping build from the back, making good passes or supporting the team defensively,” she explained.
“I’m comfortable adapting to different positions and doing whatever the team needs from me. I’m someone who works hard, is willing to learn and is always looking to improve.”
Xio has also quickly embraced the close-knit culture which has helped Wanderers make such an impressive start to the campaign.
“The biggest thing for me has been the togetherness of the group,” she said. “You can see how much everyone wants to work for each other on the pitch and that carries into the dressing room as well.
“Everyone has made me feel welcome since I arrived and I think the strong start we’ve had comes from the standards everyone sets for each other.”
Her number four shirt also carries a deeply personal significance.
“The number four means a lot more to me than just a shirt number,” Xio explained. “It carries a very personal meaning because of my late cousin, so every time I put that shirt on, I feel like I’m carrying a part of them with me.
“It gives me an extra sense of motivation and reminds me of why I play and who I’m playing for. It’s something I’m really proud to represent every time I step onto the pitch.”
Away from football, Rodriguez is studying towards a bachelor’s degree in Football Studies. Growing up in a Mexican-American household, former Manchester United and Mexico striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández was one of her biggest inspirations.
Her ambitions with Wanderers are now clear: to help the team challenge for the league title while continuing to develop into the best player she can be.
