Bolton Wanderers Academy extends its sincere appreciation and best wishes to Neil Pointon, a highly respected and long-serving member of our Academy coaching staff, who has announced his decision to retire after more than fifteen years of dedicated service to the club.
Throughout his time with Academy, Neil has been an important figure in the development of young talent at Bolton Wanderers. His coaching expertise has benefited players across the full spectrum of our youth setup, from their earliest steps in the Pre-Academy, through the crucial skill acquisition in the Academy Foundation Phase (U9-U11) and into the more advanced tactical understanding required in the Academy Youth Development Phase (U12-U16). Many young players have progressed under his guidance, benefiting from his commitment to their growth both on and off the pitch.
As a former professional player himself, Neil - who amassed over 600 appearances for the likes of Everton, Manchester City and Oldham - connected with aspiring footballers, sharing not just technical skills but also invaluable lessons on the dedication and mindset required to succeed in the game.
Beyond his coaching roles, Neil also contributed his time and expertise to wider club initiatives, including the BWFC International and Bolton Wanderers in the Community programmes.
Dave Gardiner, Head of Academy at Bolton Wanderers, said: "Neil has been an integral part of the Academy for such a significant period. His dedication to nurturing young talent across our Pre-Academy, Foundation and Youth Development Phases has been exceptional.
“As a former professional footballer, Neil offered our young players a genuine insight into the demands and rewards of the game, an experience that is invaluable.
“We all thank him for his contribution and wish him a very happy and fulfilling retirement."
