Julian Darby enjoyed the dream start to his temporary reign in charge as the Whites got their play-off push back on track, writes Pete Oliver.
Darby and the interim coaching team of B Team men Andy Taylor and Andrew Tutte guided Wanderers to a first win in four league games as in-form frontman Aaron Collins got the only goal of the game early in the second half.
Collins had also scored twice against the Terriers in the EFL Trophy last month but his seventh league goal of the campaign was far more important as Wanderers avenged their 4-0 home loss in September to hand Huddersfield their first league defeat since the start of the following month.
It was just what Wanderers – giving everything to stop Town’s march up the table with a first clean sheet in six games – needed after a tough few weeks and the perfect day for local lad Darby after years of service to the club as player and coach.
A first game in charge for the interim management team brought three changes to Wanderers’ starting line-up and a fresh approach.
The Whites noticeably moved the ball forward more quickly and in a bright start enjoyed by the travelling fans two of those returning to starting duty threatened the Town goal.

A pass from George Johnston allowed Victor Adeboyejo to make room for a shot he steered he just and then when goalkeeper Luke Southwood kicked long, Klaidi Lolos cut in and tested Terriers’ keeper Jacob Chapman.
At the other end a re-built Huddersfield attacked led by Wanderers’ old boy Dion Charles following his recent move along the M62 was kept largely at arm’s length and with half an hour gone Aaron Morley released Collins for a break-away he couldn’t quite turn into a real chance.
It had been resolute stuff from the Whites – stilling missing defenders Ricardo Almeida Santos and Eoin Toal – and they again had to defend well at the start of the second half as Huddersfield tried to build momentum and add to their 16-game unbeaten league run.
Wanderers didn’t allow the Terriers any chances, though, and 10 minutes into the second half Darby’s troops grabbed the lead.
With Adeboyejo battling for possession, Josh Dacres-Cogley nipped in and chipped the ball perfectly into the path of Collins. He had caused the hosts one or two early problems and once again came alive in the box to calmly take the ball around Chapman and drill home his 14th goal of the season.
That gave Wanderers a prize to hang onto and they duly dug in to protect it.
The defensive unit dealt with a succession of balls into the penalty area to superbly protect goalkeeper Luke Southwood, whose first real save came 11 minutes from the end when he got down well to keep out an angled drive from Town substitute Callum Marshall.
The Whites looked to try and relieve the pressure on the break and Joel Randall was only inches away from heading a second goal to add some extra insurance.
The substitute then had another chance after robbing Tom Lees but Chapman saved his effort to take the fight to end before Wanderers were able to celebrate a notable win while they look for a permanent replacement in the dug-out.
