Schumacher | Another One That Got Away

Steven Schumacher disappointment Doncaster

Steven Schumacher admitted Wanderers had let another opportunity pass them by as they had to settle for a 15th draw of the season.

Wanderers failed to score for just the third time this year as they were held to a 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

The result – a fifth draw in the Whites’ last seven games – nudged them a point closer to Cardiff City in second place but didn’t allow Schumacher’s men to really capitalise on a home defeat for the Welshmen.

“Again, another one that's got away from us, a game where we have all of the ball, all of the play, all of the chances, rinse and repeat,” said the Whites’ boss. “We didn't take our chances, although there weren’t as many clear chances as there were on Saturday.

“The keeper didn't make as many saves. I think we only had three shots on target, so didn’t work him enough, and we probably didn't show enough quality in the final third at times.

“It's frustrating because we haven't won. It took us too long to regain our composure in the second half but then after that it's followed a similar pattern where we're putting good balls in the box.

Player disappointment Doncaster

“I've just said to the two wide players, to Thierry and Ibby, that they've got to be inside their man on the back post, because it's a tap-in. I've said that all season, so I feel as though small details like that have let us down really, and that's why we haven't won more games than what we should have.

“Fifteen draws is a third of a season, if it stays like that, and there's still eight games to go, so far too many draws, we know that. I think in those draws there must be, I don't know, 10 where we've probably had 20 shots on goal, so we've been guilty of not being clinical.

“We've said that all season, and we get punished for little mistakes. That wasn’t the case tonight we were relatively clean on that side of it but we probably didn't show enough quality with our final ball and execution in the final third.”

Wanderers are now unbeaten in 13 games and sit third in League One. And despite the disappointment of dropping more points to a side in the bottom third of the table, the Whites remain on course to secure at least a play-off place.

“That's the objective, to try and get promoted,” added Schumacher, who confirmed that the thigh injury that kept out on-loan winger Corey Blackett-Taylor was a serious one which would 'not be a quick fix'. “We're in the top six. I don't know how many points we are ahead of seventh and I don't know how many exactly we are behind Cardiff as I haven’t looked at the table yet.

“But we keep going. There's a long way to go and there’s 24 points to play for, so we just keep moving and try and win on Saturday at Port Vale.”
