Schumacher | Got To Be More Ruthless

Head Coach Steven Schumacher was frustrated as his Wanderers side were beaten 3-1 away at Derby County on Friday night.

Ruben Rodrigues' strike late in the first-half saw Wanderers lead in the East Midlands before Derby hit back after the break after quick-fire goals from Ryan Nyambe and Jack Robinson turned the game on its head, with Rhian Brewster scoring the Rams' third in added time.

Following full-time at Pride Park, Schumacher provided an honest assessment to Wanderers TV.

Schumacher said: "Points dropped again unnecessarily. We've got to do better on both sides of the ball. We've got to win games that we're so dominant in, same as what I said against Bristol City. When you smell blood, you've got to take it. You've got to be more ruthless, be more clinical. We should have been more than 1-0 up at half-time.

"You're going to get a reaction from a home team who are really struggling at the moment. We obviously expected that. In the first three minutes, they're ahead in the game from absolutely out of nowhere.

"It's a lack of concentration, we didn't do the basics well enough in that first five minutes, and the game gets away from you. Even more frustrating, obviously on Tuesday night, that was something we did so well. We knew that they were going to come at us in that second half, and similar story tonight.

"When we get them big moments in front of goal, we've got to take them because if you don't, you always give the opportunity to the opponent to get one back and that's it, so they got a reaction out of Derby, but we didn't concentrate for the whole game. We've lost concentration for five minutes, and it's cost us three points.

"We've had three big chances, more than that, and our play wasn't even brilliant. Like we still were a bit sloppy at times in the first half. Some of our play wasn't great, but we were getting the chances. They've just got to go in. It's as simple as that. Because if it's 3-0 at half-time, there's no reaction because the crowd's gone and the players have obviously been deflated. But because we haven't got further ahead, you give them a chance.

"We know how difficult it is to try and break down at times and then you need a little bit of magic. We've created some big chances. The goalie made a worldie save, I think it was from Sam Dalby, in one or two other big moments, but not enough obviously to get back into it."

The international break will pause Wanderers' Sky Bet Championship campaign for a fortnight.

Portsmouth are the next opponents when they visit the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Saturday 21st November, and Schumacher says his squad will be ready to go again.

He added: "We'll use the break to reset and refocus and recharge, get some people hopefully back from injury and freshen up, ready to go again against Portsmouth in two weeks' time."
