Steven Schumacher is a happy man going into the international break after seeing his side sign off with back-to-back wins.
Wanderers backed up a home victory over Cardiff with Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 success at Norwich City to go into the extended break with a points’ tally in double figures and sitting 15th in the Championship table.
The win at Carrow Road gave the Whites a first away success of the campaign and Schumacher is encouraged by the start his new-look team has made since winning promotion last season.
“It's been a really good eight games for us I must say, even though we've had those four results where we didn't win,” said the Whites’ boss. “I've been so proud of the players. I said that to them before the game, the way they've adapted to it. I asked them on day one of pre-season to go and attack this Championship and play with no fear and we've done that.
“I said to them we're going to need to stick together at times because we'll have difficult moments and they’ve done that. They've only got points on the board at QPR and Cardiff when we didn't play well when we had to stick together and I said as well that we need to make sure that nobody likes playing against us.
“I'm sure Norwich didn't enjoy playing against us because the energy that we played with was outstanding and that's why I'm just delighted we've managed to get the points on the board.
“If they commit to the attacks we work on and we execute the stuff that we do in training then we hope that we can create and cause teams problems. Also, what we have to understand is that we can't keep needing to score two and three and four goals away from home to win games. We have to make sure that we're a little bit more secure, although sometimes an opposition score against you and there's nothing you can do about it.
“It's been a good day for us and we're really pleased. I’m so pleased for the players but most importantly for our fans. To see us win away from home after how we've played away from home and not got the results that we deserved, they can go home on that huge, long journey really happy.”
Wanderers were behind after just five minutes as Norwich set the tone for a pulsating encounter with a thunderbolt from Mohamed Toure putting the home side ahead.
Thierry Gale’s second goal in two games and a stunning first Wanderers’ goal from Gaizka Larrazabal then had the sides level at the break after City had briefly restored their lead.
Wanderers went in front with another top-class finish from Sam Dalby – his third of the season – and after Norwich made it 3-3, an instant impact from substitute Atsuki Ito sealed the points and a deserved success when he coolly slotted home his first goal in English football 20 minutes from the end.
The Whites now don’t play again until the visit of Stoke City on Saturday, 10th October and Schumacher was delighted to see his team finish – for now – on a high thanks to their never-say-die Sunday showing.
“That mentality as a group is so important,” he added. “We were successful last year. We got promoted and it wasn't easy. It was a journey that had ups and downs in the season.
“I could see the character in the team then that never knew when we were beaten and how many late goals that we scored. Today you can see that same character and characteristics that we're trying to bring to the club.
“So what if there's a bit of disappointment? You've just got to keep going and keep believing in what you're trying to do and stick together as a team because if you do that, you've always got a chance.
“We never let our heads drop once when we were pegged back twice and, in the end, we've done enough to get a huge three points on the board.”
