Schumacher | The Right Reaction

Team celebration Peterborough

Steven Schumacher praised his side’s reaction and resilience as Wanderers bounced back with another home success.

The Whites hit back from just a second League One loss of the season at Northampton Town to beat Peterborough United 2-1 and make it a hat-trick of League One wins at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Top scorer Mason Burstow got both goals inside the opening 20 minutes and even though Wanderers couldn’t find a third to make it a more comfortable afternoon, Schumacher was happy with the outcome.

“We spoke before the game about getting a reaction,” said the Whites’ Head Coach. “We obviously had the result that went against us last week that we didn't want and we got a reaction towards the start of the game when we were excellent.

“We played on the front foot, played with all the energy that we wanted to play with. The possession work that we did, that we worked on in the week, was outstanding and we scored two brilliant goals to get us off to a flyer.

“And then, like I said in the Press the other day, these are a good team that can cause you problems because of how they pass and how they move and rotate so we had to grind it out and in the end it was a hard-fought game like we knew it would be.

“What I would like it to be is for energy to stay with the team and in the stadium and with the atmosphere to keep going, because it's not easy for opposition when we play like that.

“We've all got to play our part. The lads have got to be at it and the fans have got to be at it and try and get the third and fourth goal and kill it off like we did against Wimbledon and Wigan. Today we didn't manage to get the third goal and as I say, Peterborough found a way to get themselves back in the game and credit to them for doing that.

“Now we've got to go and win again. We haven't gone back-to-back wins so that's the next challenge, get that first away win if we can and keep moving forward up the league in the direction we want to go.”

The next opportunity to record a first away success will come at Burton Albion next Saturday with Wanderers aiming to keep edging nearer the top six with a repeat of last season's first ever victory at the Pirelli Stadium.

Schumacher’s men are up to eighth place in the table – two points outside the play-off zone – after Burstow took his goal tally for the season to seven with two fantastic finishes to erase the memory of a costly miss at Northampton and take him clear at the top of League One's goal-scoring charts.

Teddy Sharman-Lowe also had a tough afternoon at the Sixfields Stadium but stood firm against Peterborough with one big first-half save and then some assured handling after the break when the league’s bottom club tried to complete a comeback.

“I've just said to Mason I'm really pleased for you because he was down last week after the game, as was Teddy,” Schumacher added.

“They’re young players and they’re going to make mistakes. It’s how you react from it and come back and play with confidence. I've got that belief in them because they're two brilliant players, two great lads as well I must say, and I thought the pair of them were excellent.

“I'm delighted for Mason to get his two goals, which keeps him moving along nicely. That’s seven now for him and Teddy was a lot better today as well, so I'm pleased.”
