U21s Preview | Blackburn Rovers v Wanderers

Julian Darby applause Coventry

The U21s face a local derby tonight (Monday) when they take on Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League Cup.

The young Whites go to the Lancashire FA headquarters in Leyland (KO 7pm) looking for a first win in Group A of the competition.

Julian Darby’s side took their first point against group leaders Southampton last time out and would go second in the table with victory against Rovers – who currently sit in that position after a win and a draw in their opening two fixtures.

The Whites will also be looking to bounce back from a first Professional Development League loss of the campaign after a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United last week handed Wanderers a first defeat anywhere since losing to QPR in their first game of the season in the Premier League Cup.

“You never want to lose but I can’t complain about the start we’ve had,” said Darby, who had overseen six straight league wins to see the Whites sit top of the table.

“We’ve done really well in the first few weeks in a new competition and maybe it just caught up with us a little bit last time.

“Losing will have hurt the boys and it’s how we respond now. Like Southampton, Blackburn are another Category On side which plays in Premier League 2 so it will be a tough game.

“But we had a good result against Southampton in our last game in this competition and we’ll go there and try and get another one.”

Rovers won 1-0 at Crystal Palace in their last league fixture and will also have eyes on qualification for the knock-out stages of the Premier League Cup after reaching last season's semi-finals and bouncing back from an opening loss to Southampton to beat QPR 4-2 last month.

Meanwhile at U18 level, the Whites continued their impressive run with a third win in four league games on Saturday.

Denver Clement bagged a hat-trick in a 5-2 win at Huddersfield Town which lifted Danny Clark’s side to third place in the northern group of the Professional Development League.

Dan Ogboru and Sam Hopkinson were also on target as Wanderers made it 11 goals in their last two games to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.
